Phones ringing ever 5mins, walking into the office to hundreds of emails every day, deadlines to beat, mortgage payments…  Now take yourself a million miles away from this, lying on your bed under the influence of lavender oil, dreaming of being far away on a secluded beach.

Lavender is probably the best known of all essential oils used in aromatherapy and is particularly good at alleviating anxiety and stress.  A few years ago a university study found that lavender oil diffused in a room was just as effective a calming tool as standard sedatives.

Inhalation of lavender does generally relax and a few drops on a tissue under a pillow at night will often induce sleep.

Do you need to relax more?

A survey done found that 68% of workers in London suffer from stress.  Check if you have any of these common symptoms associated with stress. Are you?

  • Indecisive or lacking confidence?
  • Impatient and irritable?
  • Finding it hard to sleep?
  • Tired or lethargic?
  • Getting frequent headaches?
  • Smoking or drinking more than usual?

Some ways to reduce your stress levels:

If the answer to the majority of these questions is yes, then you need to take steps to reducing your stress levels.  If certain factors continually make you stressed, discuss ways of reducing them with your manager, don’t suffer in silence.  Many companies nowadays offer an in house councillor.

  • Be realistic – don’t set impossible goals for people and yourself.
  • Identify what incidents cause you stress and record these day to day basis this may help you to anticipate their occurrence.
  • Learn to relax away from work – regular exercise can help to alleviate stress
  • Organise, deputise and supervise, prioritise your work and make realistic deadlines
  • Ensure you take regular breaks throughout your working day
